Affordable Housing

Resort-towns are usually equated with a variety of phenomena such as: astounding-but-accessible topography, a large and developed service sector of the economy, a variety of amenities that attract a broad range of tourists/travelers, and expensive homes. Issues of affordable housing in mountain resort towns vary, but there are consistent themes. As Golden moves towards resort status, it is impossible to know the exact future of the town. However, Golden has the advantage of not being ‘the first’ resort community, and can look at the experiences of other resort towns to develop an idea of consistent trends and possible outcomes. This study relies largely on the resort town experiences of Canmore and Banff in Alberta, Whistler BC, and refers to some events in different locations in Colorado to inform the Town of Golden about potential developments in the housing sector.
